"Feeling better today?" My Mother asked as we picked up our bags and headed out of Yoga class.
"Yeah." I smiled.
She put her arm around me. "Good."
"I feel like I have no friends though. I spent like every waking moment with Luken and Dina." I said.
She smiled. "You ready to talk about it?"
I nodded.
"Join more clubs. Meet new people." She said.
"What if I got a job at the the Godiva Chocolate Factory?" I suggested.
"Is that a place to meet people?" She asked.
I just shrugged my shoulders. "I don't know. Maybe Starbucks?" I said.
"Who's going to hire you? I mean you head out to college in a few months." She said.
"I guess I can just wait and make friends at school." I said.
We there our bags in the back of the van and got in.
"Why are you and Austin drifting apart? I figured this whole thing would make you two closer than ever." She said. She pulled out of the parking lot and headed down the main street.
"I think he wants to be more than friends." I said.
"Maybe he is just seeking the closeness. He's probably lonely." She said.
"Mark told me the same thing." I said.
"He needs you. He needs someone he can talk to and make him feel better." She said.
"I guess."
"Men deal with pain much differently than women do." She said.
"I know."
"He's not in the same frame of mind right now. He's not thinking clearly." She said.
"I don't think you and Mark realize how alike you two are." I said as we pulled into our driveway. I got out and grabbed my bag. She followed into the house behind me. "Your brother is exactly like his father." She said.
"Whatever you say, Mom." I said.
I went to my bedroom and layed down on my bed. I started to think about Austin. I hadn't talked to him for a week, since the night we went to Tracy's. I had been tagging along with my Mom all week to Yoga, Church Group, her Womens Health Group, grocery shopping and her cooking classes. I was already bored of most of it. I went back out to the living room and picked up the chordless phone. "Did you take my advice?" Mark asked. Him and Dad were watching Mash on tv.
"Never take his advice." Dad said.
"I didn't." I said.
"Hey, I give good advice." Mark shouted as I closed my bedroom door. I sat down on my recliner and dialed Austin's number.
"Hello?" He asked.
"Hey. . ." I said.
He didn't say anything and there was an awkward silence. "I wanted to see how you were doing." I said.
"I'm fine."
"Do you wanna come over?" I asked.
"No. Wouldn't you to think I'm trying to seduce you." He said.
"Austin, stop." I said.
"Are you still going to BU?" He asked.
"Yes. You?"
"Yeah."
"Cool. I can't wait." I said.
"Me neither." He said. "I'll get to party all I want."
"If you're not getting good grades, you'll get kicked out."
"Thanks Mom." He said.
"Austin, I know you are going through a rough time. I am too. Partying is not the answer." I said.
"The only other thing that makes me feel better is sex. Do you think I am getting that right now?" He asked. He sounded so frustrated.
"Men!" I shouted.
"Just being honest." He said.
"Come over, Austin. Bring over your 80's game." I said.
He hung up the phone. I rolled my eyes and laughed. I took a quick shower, then threw on some jeans and a t-shirt. I heard a knock on the front door, so I made a mad dash for the door. It was him. He was standing there with the game in his hands. I smiled at him. "Come in." I said.
"Hey Austin." Mark said.
"How you doing, kiddo?" Dad asked.
"Good." Austin said.
"We're gonna play a game for a bit." I said.
"Have fun." Dad said smiling.
We went to my room and I shut the door. I layed back on my bed. "Okay, set it up." I said.
He didn't say anything. I looked up at him and he was starting to cry. "I'm sorry." He said. "I know you've been keeping yourself busy, but I havn't. I've just been sitting around with nothing to do but continously picture the accident in my head over and over again."
I crawled over to him on the bed and stood up on my knees. I pulled him over to me and hugged him. I just held him in my arms for a few minutes until he was able to calrm down. "Sorry." He said again.
"It's okay." I said softly.
He wiped his eyes, then looked me in the eyes.
"Austin, are you attracted to me?" I asked.
"Taylor." He said. He laughed nervously.
"Are you?" I asked.
He nodded. "Always have been." He said.
"Really?"
"Luken knew." He said. "We both liked you at the same time, but I could tell he liked you a lot more at the time, so I told him to go for it."
I smiled. I layed back down in my bed and gestured with my finger for him to come over to me.
"What?" He asked.
I gestured with my finger again. He gave me a strange look. "Ummm." He said looking around. I sat up and shook my head giggling. "Set up the game." I told him.
"I think what you had in mind was a little better than the 80's game." He said.
"Yeah, well you blew it this time." I said.
"Quite the teaser I see." He said.
"Shut up and set up the game." I said.
He laughed and set the board out in the middle of my bed. We got the peices and the cards together.
We each rolled the dice to see who goes first. I rolled a 6 and he rolled a 2. "Oh look at that." I teased.
"That doesn't mean you're going to win the game." He said.
"Just watch." I said giggling.
